Extending 30 miles through the dramatic border country between Shropshire and Herefordshire, The Mortimer Trail offers spectacular views, ancient woodlands, and a rich tapestry of local history.  Whether you’re an experienced trekker looking to tackle a full day’s hike or simply after a tranquil woodland stroll with the dog, the trail is easily accessible right on our doorstep.

The Mortimer Trail winds its way along high crests and lush river valleys between the historic town of Ludlow and the market town of Kington. Enjoy sweeping, uninterrupted views across the Shropshire Hills, the Clee Hills, and out towards the Welsh Marches. Pass through the iconic Mortimer Forest, home to rare fallow deer, ancient oak trees, and vibrant birdlife. Walk in the footsteps of the medieval Mortimer family, discovering iron-age hillforts, historic castles, and tranquil countryside villages along the route.

There is no need to commit to the full 30 miles to experience the best of the trail! The northern trailhead starts at Ludlow Castle, just a short drive from Lodge Coppice.  From here, you can step directly onto the path and explore the high trails of Mortimer Forest or take on shorter, circular loops before heading back to Lodge Coppice for a relaxed evening.
